Housing and Homelessness

Young people aged between 16 to 25, who are experiencing or at risk of homelessness are provided with opportunities to experience safety, security and connection through IYS Specialist Housing Service.

Originally offering 3 month temporary crisis housing options for young people and families in the Inala, Durack and Richlands area in 1986, housing support service has expanded to deliver free information, advocacy, referrals, support, case management, and short – medium term transitional accommodation to over 400 young people each year.

OUR EXPERIENCED HOUSING TEAM PROVIDES THE FOLLOWING SUPPORT:

  • Assisting young people aged between 16 and 25 years who have concerns about the security of their accommodation
  • Providing advice on housing options
  • Supporting young people to access crisis, medium or long-term housing
  • support to maintain current accommodation
  • Supporting access to services and breaking down the barriers which prevent young people from eligibility as tenants in local share houses
  • Supporting young people to transition from supported to independent accommodation

IYS community-based support

LGBTIQAP+ Friendly House

IYS is proud to being the first service provider to launch a specialist housing service for LGBTIQAP+young people from Greater Brisbane in 2014. This crucial addition to our housing support service provides a safe and inclusive environment to LGBTIQAP+ young people, who would otherwise remain at risk of being homeless due to fear of being targeted.

OUR GOAL IS TO PROVIDE YOUNG PEOPLE WITH PATHWAYS TO SAFE, SUSTAINABLE LONG-TERM ACCOMMODATION

We have six properties to provide transitional supported accommodation for young people who are experiencing or are at risk of homelessness. These properties cater for:

  • Young women aged between 16 and 25
  • Young people who identify as a part of the LGBTIQ community aged between 16 and 25
  • Young families where the parents are aged between 16 and 25

Our service is individually tailored to each young person to ensure the outcome is best suited to their individual needs.

As an integrated youth and families service we have the ability to refer young people internally to our other programs to help them create their own opportunities, whether it be finding a job, enhancing their own health and wellbeing or reconnecting with their family or community.
