Housing and Homelessness

Young people aged between 16 to 25, who are experiencing or at risk of homelessness are provided with opportunities to experience safety, security and connection through IYS Specialist Housing Service.

Offering support since 1986, IYS’s services have expanded to deliver free information, advocacy, referrals, support, case management, and short – medium term transitional accommodation to over 400 young people each year.

IYS Specialist Housing program provides the following support to young people aged between 16 and 25 years:

  • Advice and advocacy with housing applications.
  • Support to make referrals to crisis and transitional accommodation (especially through QHIP).
  • (Dependent on vacancies) IYS can offer transitional supported accommodation on a short term, supported lease agreement.
  • Support to maintain current accommodation.
  • Support to access services and remove the barriers which prevent young people from being viewed as eligible tenants in private rental properties.
  • Supporting young people to transition from supported accommodation to independent accommodation.

IYS community-based support

LGBTIQAP+ Friendly House

IYS is proud to being the first service provider to launch a specialist housing service for LGBTIQAP+young people from Greater Brisbane in 2014. This crucial addition to our housing support service provides a safe and inclusive environment to LGBTIQAP+ young people, who would otherwise remain at risk of being homeless due to fear of being targeted.

OUR GOAL IS TO PROVIDE YOUNG PEOPLE WITH PATHWAYS TO SAFE, SUSTAINABLE LONG-TERM ACCOMMODATION
