Welcome to IYS

We are really excited to share this update about IYS and our programs and services with you.

Over the last 35 years Inspire Youth and Family Services Inc. (IYS), formerly Inala Youth Care Community Inc. trading as Inala Youth Service, has worked across South-West Brisbane with vulnerable and at risk young people and their families. From our establishment as a volunteer-based accommodation service for homeless young people to our current range of specialist services and programs for young people and families, we are committed to creating opportunities for vulnerable and at risk young people.

We believe that every young person deserves opportunities to build a better life, and we support this belief through early intervention, group programs and intensive one-to-one support.

Since 2009 IYS has been dedicated to operating a youth drop in space in Inala, with regular Wednesday and Thursday drop in sessions running at the HUT in DJ Sherrington Park in Inala from 2014 – 2020. At its peak, the HUT attracted 350 + young people to the Inala Skate Park each month.

Whilst at the HUT young people experienced a safe, welcoming environment, received afternoon tea, and participated in a range of sport, recreation, art, music and life skills activities.

Through a range of IYS and other services, young people who were experiencing difficulties were able to connect with mental health, alcohol and other drugs, sexual assault, and other support workers, in addition to IYS support workers and specialisations. The HUT promotes diversity and inclusion and assists young people to develop their conflict resolution and mediation skills, as well as providing opportunities for young people to build positive relationships with PCYC and police liaison officers.

Lockdowns and physical distancing requirements associated with the COVID-19 global pandemic saw us have to shut the doors to the HUT whilst we developed COVID-safe operating processes to enable us to reopen the space.

A second consequence of the pandemic has been a reduction in the availability of grants and other financial supports which enable us to staff and run activities at the HUT.

We are very excited to be reopening the HUT in 2021, and whilst we are starting out one day per fortnight, we are very optimistic about gaining the necessary support to enable us to resume more frequent and regular activities at this valuable youth centre.
