The hut

Located in DJ Sherrington Park in Inala, The Hut is IYS’ youth outreach centre. It operates on Wednesday and Thursday afternoons from 3 -5pm providing young people with free activities, afternoon tea and a place to hang out after school.
Positioned next to the skate park, The Hut draws crowds of over 500 young people a month with local children, young people and families coming together every week.
The Hut is run by Lisa T and her team of dedicated volunteers who work tirelessly to ensure our youth space is accessible to any young person every week.

Programs at The Hut
During the week The Hut is used to deliver a series of programs with the Ready 4 Work and Girls With a Purpose programs running regularly to engage local young people in more positive life trajectories. For younger children The Hut runs its own regular school holiday program and our CEO has a monthly reading circle at the park called CEO Storytime.

Early intervention
The Hut is a successful form of early intervention in the local community as it not only entertains, but also educates local children and young people about socially acceptable behaviours and creates opportunities for them to make more positive life choices. Early intervention is an effective, proactive approach to mitigating antisocial behaviour in the community.
The Hut is also a soft entry point to the service’s other programs as the staff and volunteers working at The Hut are able to identify the needs of particular young people and offer them access into additional programs that could help them.
